Calligraphy, Sketches, & Demonstration Painting

Calligraphy

For those who want to practice their calligraphy, the first two words below, each composed of a combination of kanji and hiragana, are both pronounced the same: kakizome. The meaning is different, however. The meaning of the first kakizome is "first writing of the new year."

The meaning of the second kakizome is "first drawing of the new year."

This final calligraphy is kanji for nanten, or heavenly bamboo. By itself, the first kanji character, nan, means "south," and the second kanji character, ten, means "heaven" or "sky."

Sketch and Painting

The basic line drawing of a nanten below is done entirely using the senbyō-hō (with bones; i.e. lines) technique.

The painting below is the same subject using the mokkotsu-hō technique.

Demonstration Painting

Here is my demonstration nanten painting, this time in a snow scene. One way that this is indicated is by the flecks of white, indicating falling snow. My painting also had snow covering part of the nanten, but it doesn't show up very well in my scanned image.
