Week 2

Demonstration Art

From a painting by Ohara Koson (1877 – 1945). See discussion.

Calligraphy, Sketches & Demonstration Painting

Calligraphy

The kanji characters below represent yashi (palm tree) for those who want to practice their calligraphy. The strokes in "ya" are too crowded for arrows indicating stroke direction. See if you can figure out what they should be.

Sketches

Here are some relatively simple sketches for practice. This first one is a coconut.

Here is a more complete palm tree. It is of a wajuro, a native Japanese species.

Demonstration Painting

I chose to paint California fan palms, based on the photo in 2.1 of the Thousand Palms Oasis. It has palms, reeds, water, and even ducks. I used a technique called warifude to paint the leaves of the fronds. It is done by spreading the bristles of a stiff-bristled brush before loading it with ink. Several leaves can be painted with each stroke.
