The relatively simple clivia sketch below is for practice.

I painted the blossom petals using the kōrokutensai-hō technique; outlines around color filling. With mokkotsu-hō, the outlines are dispensed with. Individual petals are distinguished by loading multiple colors or hues on the brush. I used orange with yellow at the tip. (Color distortion by my scanner made the orange look red in the painting below.) The gradation of shading applied with the brush is how each petal is made to stand out from the others. It can be challenging, but experiment with it.
