Origami & Demonstration Painting -- Hinamatsuri Dolls

This week, we are going to do some other activities besides painting. One of them is to sing a Hina Matsuri song in our Zoom class session. The words and notes are shown in unit 5.1 of this module.

Another activity is to make a paper box using origami paper folding techniques. The instructions are shown below. Note that the numbers represent the starting position of each step. Once the paper is folded the way it is supposed to be, it will look like the next illustration. A square piece of paper is the only prerequisite for making the box. The larger the paper, the larger the box.

This week's painting subject, Hina Matsuri dolls, has peach blossoms in it. The following sketch gives a look at how to do them.

  1. Draw white peach blossoms like my sketch with sumi.

  2. Fill the petal outlines with color if you like. This technique, using both outlines and filler, is called kōrokutensai-hō.

Another feature of my painting is of an emperor doll wearing an eboshi, a special type of hat that aristocrats wore. The following detail from a byōbu (screen) painting shows a scene from the book Genji monogatari (Tale of Genji). Genji is shown wearing an eboshi. The artist is unknown, but the painting is done in the style favored by Tosa School artists during the Edo Period.

Here is my demonstration painting.
