Calligraphy, Sketches, & Painting Demonstration

Calligraphy

There are two words this week for those who want to practice their calligraphy. The first word using kanji is shōgatsu (new year).

The next word, using a combination of hiragana, one of the phonetic syllabaries, and kanji (the middle character) is okazari (decoration).

Sketches

There are two relatively simple sketches this week for practice. The first is of a kagamimochi with a bunny on top.

The next is an okazari. This is one of mine, made to resemble a crane with a turtle and a plastic decoration that features pine, plum, and bamboo (shōchikubai

Demonstration Painting

The model for my demonstration painting is an okazari of mine. In the guidance below, I refer to mizuhiki. Mizuhiki are thin decorative wires that are part of this okazari. They come in a variety of colors. Mine are gold colored, very similar in color to the shimenawa (rice straw rope) that forms the loop at the top and the central lengths of straw below that down the middle of the okazari. The three small loops below the main one at the top and the lengths of wire to the right and left of the central vertical straw are mizuhiki.
