Calligraphy, Sketches & Demonstration Painting

Calligraphy

The phonetic katakana characters below are saboten (cactus) for those who want to practice their calligraphy.

Sketches

This relatively simple prickly pear cactus sketch is for practice.

Demonstration Painting

This painting is modeled on a saguaro cactus with different stages of blossoms and fruit shown. Most of the painting was done using mokkotsu-hō strokes. The needles used senbyō-hō. The painting was first done with no concern for anything other than the saguaro; i.e. I gave no thought to birds, insects, or any other sort of tenkei. Once that was finished, it became clear that something more was needed. I ended up by adding the distant saguaro cacti. When doing your own artwork, try to have a complete composition in mind before you start painting; what else is going to be in the painting besides the main subject, and where everything should go.
