Week 7

Demonstration Art

From a byōbu by an unknown Rinpa artist. See discussion.

Calligraphy, Sketches & Demonstration Painting

Calligraphy

For those who want to practice their calligraphy, here is the phonetic katakana word for oxalis (okizarisu). Note that the first character is pronounced with a long "o" sound, and the "i"s have a long "e" sounds. The directions of the strokes have been left out this time. See if you can figure out what they should be. (There is another Japanese name for oxalis--katabami.)

Here is the kanji character for usagi (rabbit).

Sketches

The sketch below provides some idea of how to paint oxalis leaves. The green colored leaves are the real thing. The others are made by making two dot strokes per leaflet with a vein down the middle.

Here are two sketches of oxalis with blossoms; one colored red-violet and the other yellow.

Demonstration Painting

Here is my demonstration painting, combining a rabbit with lunch, otherwise known as oxalis, along with a tenkei butterfly.
