Week 12

Demonstration

From a shin-hanga woodblock print by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957). See Discussion.

Calligraphy, Sketches, & Demonstration Painting

Calligraphy

The characters below are for the Japanese word kazari (decorations). (Kazari replaces sōshoku from the syllabus because though the meaning is similar, the Japanese characters are simpler to write.) The first character, kaza, is a kanji ideogram, and the second character, ri, is from the phonetic hiragana character set. Combinations like this are extremely common in all but the most basic Japanese writing. Kazari is for those who want to practice their calligraphy.

Sketches

Little ceramic village buildings--houses, shops, etc.--have been popular for holiday decorations in recent years. The sketches below are of three such houses for practice.

Gingerbread houses have been around for much longer. The model for this next sketch was a cross stitch version of a gingerbread house.

We don't know who lives in this gingerbread house. Could it be Mr. & Mrs. Claus?

Demonstration Painting

My model for this decoration is something that has been in my family for years. I don't know what to call it. Perhaps you have something that pleases you for your model. Or this one will be fine if you like.
