From a silk painting by Kanō Tansetsu (1654 - 1713). See discussion.
The kanji word below is oogiku (large chrysanthemum) for those who want to practice their calligraphy.
This is a relatively simple chrysanthemum sketch for practice.
My objective was to paint a white chrysanthemum blossom. Since that wouldn't stand out very well on white paper, I needed some way to fix that. What I did first was to load the brush with whipping (or heavy) cream, then add light blue gansai to the tip. How much of the brush tip gets the blue coloring depends on the paper being used and/or the amount of coloring you want to apply. That is something that you need to experiment with if you are going to do the same thing. Alternatives to using cream are to use white gansai paint or hide glue.
Something else I experimented with to help the blossom stand out was to paint a blend of hide glue mixed with faint color to the back of the painting. Unfortunately, that didn't work out well with the paper I used, so I stayed with a white background for my final painting.
Some of you may want to experiment with painting on colored paper to see what happens.
