The hiragana word below is shishi-mai (lion dance) for those who want to practice their calligraphy.
Here is a relatively simple sketch of a shishi mask for practice.
The painting subject announced in the syllabus called for a lion dance and chrysanthemums. Such things can be easy to say but hard to execute. In this case, coming up with a decent composition with the combination of the two was a challenge. That is why I ended up putting a simplified chrysanthemum pattern (they actually look more like plum blossoms) on the lion's robe.
