The kanji word below is sazanka (Camellia sasanqua) for those who want to practice their calligraphy.
Here is a relatively simple sketch of a sazanka camellia for practice. I sketched it at the San Diego Zoo last Saturday.
The spattering effect in the background of my demonstration painting was produced by loading sumi on an old toothbrush and flicking the brush over the painting with a finger. I used a paper cutout mask to protect the blossoms.
