I use a technique called sanboku-hō in this painting; the loading of three shades of sumi on the brush. The first step is to make the three shades of sumi on a pallet or dish. Start with making dark sumi (nōboku) by rubbing an ink stick on the suzuri with a little water. With the brush loaded with sumi, put it into some additional water in a dish, diluting the ink and making a medium shade of sumi (chūboku). Do the same thing into another dish with more water to further dilute the ink, making a light shade of sumi (tanboku). Clean the brush, and you are ready to paint.
