Calligraphy
There are two calligraphy words this week, both using katakana, one of the Japanese phonetic syllabaries. The first word is gama (cattail).
The next word is sagi (heron).
Here are two relatively simple sketches for practice. The first is of herons (sagi).
The next is of cattails (gama).
One of the things I was attempting with this painting was the use of the junpitsu-hō technique; a slow, wet stroke, allowing the sumi to bleed out into the paper. It didn't work as well as I had hoped because of the paper I was using. If you have more than one type of paper, test how well the technique works with each type to see what works best.
The last step in the painting guides below uses a wash on the back side of the paper. As with the junpitsu-hō technique, the results can vary depending on the type of paper used. Test the papers you have to see what works best.
