Editorial cartoon

For my editorial cartoon, I choose to focus on the anti-vaccination epidemic. It is a topic that I am very passionate about as I grew up in a medical household giving me the knowledge and sense of importance that vaccinations pose. The fact that people choose not to vaccinate their children because they believe that it isn't safe is aggravating. They end spreading diseases that could have been prevented. I have a brother who isn't vaccinated but that's only because he's allergic to the shot not because my parents are against it. This cartoon addresses the part about the diseases that can be prevented but aren't. I choose measles because in the past years an outbreak of measles happened due to the increase of unvaccinated people. These people are then giving the disease to the people who are vaccinated because they are breaking up what is called herd immunity. The children are playing dodgeball in school when a girl is hit with a ball covered in slime which represents the spread of measles through body fluids. her friend then is then angry at the kid because her friend is now sick with a potentially dangerous disease that could have been avoided. The boy is depicted with rashes, bumps, and snot to give the viewer the idea that he is ill and carrying lots of contagious germs. I made it using Sharpies, paint markers, and a pen. My favorite part is the theme (dodgeball) and how I made it connect with the anti-vaccination message. I struggled with the gym floor because gym floors are a tan color. I had already used my only light brown/tan color on their skin so I couldn't use it on the floor. All the other browns were too dark. I ended up using a brown paint marker that was still dark but lighter than the other.
