Colorful Carl

Made with Paint markers and scratch board, carl is an old man head with lushes hair and rosy cheeks. He started as a doodle and ended up a man who is showing emotions through his facial colors. I choose to give him color because i didn't want to do shading that might take away from the charactered lines. Using just the markers to apply the paint made the colors to strong and it mixed with the black, peeling it off exposing the white background. I would apply dots and used my fingers to blot it around to avoid smearing and harsh color lines. The scratching the lines was the hardest part because of the shape and individuality of each one. I made every line smooth with no rough edges, so the image would flow together. During the critique peers suggested I give him a neck or shoulders so he wasn't floating. However I like how he is floating because it reminds me of a sticker or one of those ghosts in Super Mario Bros that don't like when you look at them.
