For this assignment, we had to choose a political or social issue to express using two hands. The topic I choose to cover was PTSD among veterans. At first, I wanted to cover veteran suicide but I couldn't properly depict that so I changed it a bit. When it comes to sculptures I tend to like to keep it simple and clean because that's what I like to see in others 3D work. My sculpture is of two hands, made from plaster of Paris and acrylic paint and markers, are painted a deep purple with the purple heart award painted in the middle of the palm. Then I have one string connecting the two hands with a dog tag on it that reads "20 out of 100 veterns suffer from PTSD". I associated the purple heart with veteran PTSD because normally you get that award if you are wounded while in action and the trauma that comes with the purple heart can and offend will stick with. Personally, I choose this topic because I had a cousin who was active in the military and got injured many times, he received 2 purple hearts and chronic pain as well as PTSD. This is one of the main reasons he overdosed, which is why I feel there needs to be more awareness and support for our troops suffering from PTSD.

This was my first time using alginate old and I found it very neat and would love to try it again. However, this being my first time I wasn't too sure about how to place my hands and peel them out. About three fingers in total kept breaking off even after I used epoxy and painted them. I struggled with a lot of things during this project, one I kept smudging the yellow paint in the center of the hands so I had to do a lot of new coats to cover it up. Second, while I was getting the dog tag the machine wouldn't let me spell veterans correctly, instead, it says "veterns" which is a bummer. Lastly, I had a last minute break where a had to glue another finger back on because my mom broke it off. However, I am really happy with the outcome and the way it expresses my message.
