"Elevates the voice of bereaved teens and creates healing conversations around grief", The New York Life award is done through the Scholastics competition. You are asked to create a piece about grief/bereavement. I choose to make mine of a "man" sitting in an aisle of a place like CVS, covered in band-aids. I was trying to depict someone who had an episode of anger in a store and now they are dealing with the aftermath of there anger. sitting in an aisle covered in band-aids hoping to feel better but still feeling empty, hopeless, and defeated, not knowing what to do next or just not being physically/mentally able to do it. I used colored pencils, ink, and fine point pen on water colored paper. Originally there was going to be two aisles however I didn't like the how i had started to color the right aisle, it was too bright. Soi decided to crop the piece and not use colored pencils for the shelves but ink. I like that I choose to do the ink because it is less saturated than colored pencils, creating a gloomy contrast. If I were to change something I think I would try and add more detail to the boxes with there coloring and imagery/text on them.
