Independent Project #3

Ribbon Robert

Made with clay, ribbon, paint, and wood, Robert is an old man ribbon dancing in a grassy field wearing his stylish top hat and birthday suit. I'm happy with how this piece came out and its simplicity, but I'm not too sure about the grass at his foot. I knew I had to cover the glue holding him up, but the grass seems out of place. Other than that I like what I ended up doing for the ribbon because that was something that took to long to figure out. First I tried gluing the ribbon to a wire so it would be in the air more Than I tried using a 3D printing pen, neither turned out so good. In the end, I think having the ribbon on the ground matches his disappointed face, and dramatic body/movements. When I was making him I wasn't sure about him since he had weird limbs, I thought looked too funny, I like them now though. The message was he was trying so hard to do something he loved but wasn't able to do anymore and the frustration/disappointment that comes with that realization. We often forget that before our grandparents or elders were in a wheelchair or had Parkinson's that did so many things. Struggling to find new things to enjoy at an old age can be difficult or depressing because it is knowing that you have to say goodbye to something you've been doing all your life. This could include things like skiing, painting, or . . . Ribbon dancing, and if they can still do it they will notice how they're progressively getting worse.
