Duck Stamp

Reference photos:

This drawing is of two Hooded Mergansers both in the water while the male Merganser begins to court with the female. The Hooded Merganser has a whole series of mating rituals and ways of showing its dominance to other males. In this drawing, the male is "standing" up in the water with its wings spread showing off its size. For this piece, I used pen and alcohol based markers. I choose to use them because I have them in a variety of colors making the shading easier. It also creates smooth texture like a painting but it is less complicated. I started with the male duck because he was more complicating and had a weird shape that made you question if he was portioned right. Moving on to the female I started strong the Head was all good but then i sectioned off a part of her back that was there. Due to that, the reference was much help afterward because their image wouldn't match up with mine. I really like how this drawing came out, however, I do wish it was a bit more realistic. I tried to add more detail and make it more lifelike than last year but that really didn't happen as i planned. My favorite part in the water, because I didn't know how I wanted to draw it. I didn't plan on making it so "choppy" but I like how it looks with the colors and the reflection on the ducks.
