Year 9 Mathematics Standard
TERM 1, 2026
Students will begin the semester with Algebraic Techniques. Students will learn to operate with and simplify algebraic fractions with numerical denominators, expand and simplify algebraic expressions including negative coefficients and expand binomial products using the distributive law or area models.
Students will then move on to the topic Area, Surface Area and Volume. During this unit students will calculate the area of a variety of composite figures, calculate surface areas of composite solids and cylinders and calculate the volume of composite solids including right prisms, composite solids and cylinders.
Finally, students will begin the topic Indices. They will apply the index laws to simplify algebraic expressions involving products and quotients, establish the meaning of a zero index and simplify related algebraic expressions and apply index laws to numerical expressions with negative-integer indices.
During Term 1, students will complete Task 1 which contributes 20% of the student's overall assessment for the year.
