Year 11 Mathematics Extension
TERM 1, 2026
In 2026, students will commence the Preliminary Mathematics Extension course. It is a NESA requirement for students studying this course to complete all assessment tasks for BOTH the Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Extension 1 courses.
To be successful candidates in this course, students are expected to have a solid understanding of algebraic skills from the Advanced Pathway in Stage 5; this is a pre-requisite for success in this course.
ADVANCED: Algebraic Techniques, Linear, Quadratic and Cubic Functions, Trigonometry, Introduction to Functions and Relations
During Term 1, students will further their Algebraic Techniques to include Stage 6 level of difficulty. Next, the students will develop their understanding of functions, both theoretically and graphically. Students will explore graphs including Linear, Quadratic and Cubic Functions. Finally we work on Trigonometry, looking at acute angles before progressing on to angles of any magnitude.
EXTENSION: Combinatorics and Polynomials
The topic Combinatorics introduce students to permutations and combinations, also incorporating probability. Next, the topic of Polynomials builds on their advanced understanding of quadratic and cubic functions.
In Term 1, students will complete Task 1, the first of their assessments. They will each be worth 30% of their overall Preliminary result for both the Advanced and Extension course.
