Our goal for this unit - is to explore the reasons and events that resulted in the division of the one Apostolic Church. We will investigate the differences in beliefs and practices of key reformers such as Martin Luther, which has resulted in the differences between Christian denominations today. To conclude, we will appreciate the need for ecumenism (Christian unity) in today’s Church.
The big idea for this unit: Christianity has a rich history of conflict, division and diversity, however the ecumenical movement encourages denominations to focus on what unites them, faith in Jesus Christ as saviour.
.
We will achieve this by:
Defining key terms and concepts
Investigating the events of the East-West Schism and the Reformations, European, English and Catholic Counter-Reformation.
Recognising the differences and similarities between the Christian denominations
Exploring the meaning of ecumenism, why it is important and the contributions of ecumenical organisations
We have this/these goals because: Christians are called to action in their fulfilment of the Kingdom of God, as modelled by Jesus Christ. We are encouraged to work together for the common good and to live harmoniously with each other.
