Year 8 Mathematics 

TERM 3, 2026

Students will begin Term 3 by continuing Topic 6 – Rates and Ratios, students will master the difference between ratios and rates, applying the unitary method to solve practical "best buy" scenarios and constructing distance-time graphs to represent rate-based data visually.

In Topic 7 – Equations, students will build on their algebraic skills by solving linear equations up to 2 steps. They will solve simple quadratic equations while also verifying the solutions to linear equations by substitution.

In Topic 8 – Area, students will revisit the circumference of a circle before extending these skills to calculating the area of circles and sectors. Next, they will develop and use the formulas to find the area of trapeziums, rhombuses and kites to solve problems. Choosing appropriate units of measurement for area and converting between units will complete their understanding.

Lastly, in Topic 9 – Geometrical properties, students will classify triangles and quadrilaterals according to their side and angle properties. They will then be able to apply the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals to prove geometrical theorems.

During Term 3, students will complete Task 3 which contributes to 25% of the students’ overall assessment for the year.
