Year 8 Mathematics
TERM 2, 2026
Students will begin Term 2 by continuing Topic 3 – Percentages – Financial Applications, solve diverse financial problems involving GST, profit and loss, and percentage changes, while also learning to express and convert quantities between percentages, fractions, and decimals.
In Topic 4 – Expanding and Factorising, students will focus on using algebraic laws (associative, commutative, and distributive) to manipulate expressions, empowering students to effectively expand, simplify, and factorise complex equations.
In Topic 5 – Data Analysis, students will learn to calculate and apply measures of centre (mean, median, and mode) and spread (range), while analysing how outliers and data distribution shapes, such as symmetry and skewness, influence statistical conclusions.
Lastly, in Topic 6 – Rates and Ratios, students will master the difference between ratios and rates, applying the unitary method to solve practical "best buy" scenarios and constructing distance-time graphs to represent rate-based data visually.
During Term 2, students will complete Task 2 which contributes to 50% of the overall Semester 1 Report mark, and 25% of the students’ overall assessment for the year.
