Year 8 Mathematics 

TERM 4, 2026

Students will begin Term 4 by continuing Topic 9 – Geometrical properties, where students will classify triangles and quadrilaterals according to their side and angle properties. They will then be able to apply the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals to prove geometrical theorems. 

In Topic 10 – Indices: Application to Factorising, students will apply index notation to represent whole numbers as products of powers of prime numbers. Next, they will examine cube roots and square roots, and then will finish with using index notation to establish the index laws with positive-integer indices and the zero index.

In Topic 11 – Volume, students will describe the different views of prisms and solids, and develop and apply the formula to find the volume of a prism to solve problems. They will then develop the formula for finding the volume of a cylinder and apply the formula to solve problems. Finally, they will choose appropriate units of measurement for volume and capacity and convert between units.

Lastly, in Topic 12 – Probability, students will Determine probabilities for chance experiments. This will include Identifying and describing theoretical probabilities and relative frequencies. Finally, they will Determine probabilities for complementary events.

During Term 4, students will complete Task 3 which contributes to 25% of the students’ overall assessment for the year.
