Mathematics Acceleration (Elective)

Year 9 MATHEMATICS ACCELERATION 2024

The goal for 2024 is to complete the Year 9 Stage 5 Mathematics program including all of the Stage 5.3 content from the year 10 program by the end of Term 4. Students will sit the four Year 9 Accelerated Tasks and the four Year 10 Tasks. In addition to these assessment tasks, students will also sit the two Year 10 ROSA tests. Students will be required to be self-directed in their learning and ensure any assistance required is sort from their teacher.

Term 2 : Equations, Trigonometry, Log Laws and Coordinate Geometry.

In Term 2, students start with Equations. These will include equations and inequations using algebraic fractions, literal equations and rearranging formulas. Students will solve quadratic equations, using a variety of methods, and then move onto cubic and general polynomials.

Next, students will build on their work with from last year through real-life applications of Trigonometry including right and non-right-angled triangles.

In the Log Laws topic, students will be given the opportunity to understand the difference between exponentials and logarithms. They will establish the log laws, and use them to manipulate expressions. The change of base law will also be looked at.

Finally, students will build on their skills from last year in the topic Coordinate Geometry. They will apply their knowledge of gradient, distance and midpoint to properties of triangles and quadrilaterals. Find equations of parallel and perpendicular lines, while understanding the use of practical applications using linear modelling.

During Term 2, students will complete the Year 9 Accelerated Task 2 assessment and the Year 10 Task 2 assessment. These marks will contribute to 50% of the overall Semester 1 Report marks. In addition, it contributes 20% of the student's overall assessment for the year.

Students will also be completing the first Year 10 ROSA Test. This will contribute to 50% of the student's ROSA grade.
