There are six hidden items in the house that needs to be found. Students will be working together in the groups of at least two and four. Activity Instructions
Before conducting this activity, please make sure that your students are familiar with how to use VR headsets. Prior practice is crucial as lack of knowledge can make students feel confused about what to do and how to use the device and it can be time consuming to help every student in the classroom in such short duration. The teacher should also make sure that everything is working well. Before the activity, the game environment itself should be tested out by the teacher, making sure that every item is present and hidden around the map. VR headsets should be checked too in case they don't have enough battery. After that, the instructions should be given in detail to the students. Considering that now they know how to use VR headsets, the teacher should explain the main objectives to them, saying that they will be working in groups, finding the items in the game with the help of the student worksheet, and explore the house to watch/read various content about Thanksgiving day and its origin (videos, posters). Since one student will be playing the game, the other(s) are supposed to lead them and ask questions by using the sheet (make sure that the player student is not looking at the sheet). Students should be put in 2-4 sized groups. Students should decide which one will be the player and which one will complete the worksheet
During the activity, communication between group members should be encouraged by the teacher as it is essential for the completion of the activity. The finder must depend entirely on spoken descriptions to figure out where items are hidden, and they should describe aloud what they see to confirm whether they found the right object. As students interact, the teacher circulates and monitors language use, offering support when needed, especially for learners who struggle with asking follow-up questions or giving clear descriptions. A short mid-activity check-in can be added to help students reflect briefly on their communication strategies and to clarify any confusing clues. Once the first round is completed (finding two or three items depending on the group size), students switch roles so that each partner has the chance to both explore the VR environment and practice giving verbal clues.
After the activity, students write a reflection regarding what they learned about Thanksgiving. Students can also reflect on which items were easiest or hardest to locate, which clues were most helpful, and what strategies they used to communicate successfully. in their reflections. Finally, the session can end with a brief whole class debrief, connecting the Thanksgiving items in the scavenger hunt to real holiday traditions, allowing students to link vocabulary learning with cultural understanding.
For Students
In this activity, you will work with a partner to complete a Thanksgiving-themed scavenger hunt. One of you will enter the VR house and search for six hidden items, and the other will stay outside the VR space and give clues and information. You must communicate only by speaking. Please do not show your partner your paper or screen. If you are inside the VR world, your job is to move around the house, ask questions when you do not understand, and describe what you see so your partner can help you. If you are the clue giver, your job is to read the hints aloud, explain them clearly, and answer your partner’s questions. When the VR partner thinks they have found an item, they must describe it, and the clue giver should confirm whether it is correct. Work together, ask for clarification when you need it, and try to use as much English as possible. After you finish your first round, you will switch roles so both of you can practice giving clues and searching for items. Your goal is to find all six items by communicating clearly and helping each other.
For this activity you will go to this link: https://framevr.io/thanksgivingdinner to enter Melinda's house. You don't need to create an account to enter the house. For your name tag, enter your real names, so you can be recognizable.
You will also be given a student worksheet to write your answers on. Only the clue giver student should look and answer the questions.

When you enter the map for the first time, Melinda and her dog will greet you. Make sure to read the banner behind them to have an idea on what is going on and your mission.
As you are entering the property, allow yourself one minute go walk around the house to make yourself familiar with the environment and the mechanics of the VR platform. As you are exploring around the house, always be attentive of the posters and the videos on the walls and take your time to read and watch them (you can even take notes if you'd like) as you will be asked to write a reflection paper at the end.
Then, you can get to work! As you know, you are supposed to find six items related to Thanksgiving day based on the clues you are given on the student worksheet. They are hidden around different rooms of the house. Be attentive! Check insides of various furniture if you haven't found some of them. Keep in mind that after you find a few items, switch places with your group members, so everyone can experience the excitement of VR!
Happy Thanksgiving!
