(the information below is to provide guidelines on how to use your materials for another teacher to read)
This activity is addressed to 2nd grade students with an A1 level of Catalan.
The main purpose of this activity is to introduce new vocabulary making emphasis on those words that are very frequent and common in the educational context, that is, in the school, at the same time students are learning the different places of our university. Therefore, this activity could be used as an introductory activity of a teaching unit about the different classrooms we can find at school, and once basic vocabulary has been learned, more complex language features could be introduced, for instance what we can do in each classroom (in the arts classroom we can draw a picture, paint a drawing, etc.) but using the Catalan language. So, this activity will provide them with the basic vocabulary but then it can be expanded by working how we can use it in a sentence, to achieve communication, that at the end is our main goal as language teachers: that students are able to communicate in the target language they are learning.
CEFR levels and competencies
LEVEL
Students are in the A1 level of Catalan accordinf to CEFR.
GENERAL COMPETENCIES
Declarative knowledge (savoir) - Knowledge of the world
Students will learn the standardised terminology to describe and refer to daily objects they can find at school.
COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE COMPETENCES
Linguistic competence
Students will learn language and how to use the vocabulary learned.
Lexical competence
Students will have knowledge of, and ability to use, the vocabulary of a language, in this case, the Catalan language.
So, by the end of the activity (or the teaching unit, if used the activity as an introductory task) students should move from A1 level characteristics to B1 level: not only talking about themselves, but now also talking about their school, not only be able to communicate in just one context but amplifying it, and being able to communicate themselves better in the educational context, not only understand information but also take part in basic conversations by using the sentences learned and applying the vocabulary that has been worked on.
SWBAT (Students Will Be Able To)
Students will be able to familiarise themselves with some basic words in Catalan used in the educational context
Students will be able to spell and write these Catalan words correctly
Students will be able to guess the riddles by knowing the meaning of the words taught.
Two cell phones or digital devices (one to see the 360° images and the other one to answer the quiz).
Internet connection.
Before doing the activity
The teacher will need to present to students the activity they are about to do. For this reason, it is necessary to introduce it. Make sure you explain all the details, so as to ensure students do not get lost with technology and they can succeed! So, mention they will discover a tour that includes some of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona’s places. Then, provide them the link to the 360º images. Remark that they must look at them very carefully given that there are some hidden hotspots that will show them the Catalan words to refer to some common elements (objects, materials) we can find in different spaces of the Campus. Make sure to say that they will need to pay close attention because they will need to test their knowledge on the final Trivial.
During the activity (to provide them as scaffolding/guidelines if students need so)
It can be reminded to students to pay close attention to these four images and if they have you find the three hotspots hidden in each of them. Also, it can be highlighted if they can detect any similarity with their English term, as well as enhancing to create any other strategy to better remember this new concept for the final Trivial.
Post instruction
Teachers can ask students whether they have acquired new vocabulary in Catalan or they have found the target language learning a little bit difficult. Also, the teacher can ask: What have you enjoyed about it? What could we improve? What do you think about the help we provided you? Was it enough?
Firstly, the scaffolding students will receive will be the fact of looking around the 360º images to find the hotspots. Those hotspots are placed on the materials students’ will be learning vocabulary about, so they will be able to click on the hotspot to observe how the word is spelt in Catalan while they are looking at the material, so they will guess the meaning of the word.
Secondly, this learning that has been made through the mentioned scaffolding, will be applied in the quizz, where the scaffolding will be given through the clues written in English so as to help students understand the meaning of the word. By using this plurilingual approach, students will learn the vocabulary in Catalan at the same time they are understanding its meaning. Also, as some of the vocabulary words selected to be worked are quite similar to the English language, students can rely on their plurilingual repertoire to guess both the word and the meaning. This is another kind of scaffolding they will receive, and that they can apply autonomously. Moreover, as the activity will be carried out in groups, students can do peer-help, and so help each other to figure out the different challenges the activity requires to solve.
