Sample activiy
Age group: 9–12 years old
Level: A2 (Elementary)
Grammar focus: Past simple (regular & irregular verbs)
Skills: Reading, grammar, vocabulary, speaking (optional follow-up)
Learning objectives
Identify and correctly use past simple verbs in context.
Distinguish between regular and irregular verb forms.
Understand a short narrative in the past tense.
Apply grammar knowledge in a fun, game-based environment.
Duration
25–30 minutes (can be shortened to 15–20 if needed)
Activity steps
1. Warm-up (5 min)
The teacher asks: “What did you do yesterday?” and writes some answers on the board (“played football”, “watched TV”, “went to the park”).
Briefly review how we form the past simple (regular + irregular verbs).
2. Introduce the story (3 min)
Tell students they will read about Tom’s day at the park yesterday through a short interactive quiz.
Show one example sentence: “Tom played football with his friends.”
3. Quizalize game (10–15 min)
Students open the Quizalize game (individually or in pairs).
Each question is part of the short story — they must choose the correct verb form to complete the sentences.
Example questions:
1. Yesterday Tom ___ (play) football with his friends.
→ played
2. He ___ (go) to the park at 10 a.m.
→ went
3. Tom and his sister ___ (eat) ice cream.
→ ate
4. They ___ (see) a big dog.
→ saw
5. Tom ___ (not take) his bike.
→ didn’t take
Then you have to add 10–12 questions in total, mixing regular and irregular verbs, and including 2–3 picture-based ones for visual support.
Tip: To use the “class game mode” so students can see progress on the scoreboard — it keeps them engaged!
4. Review & reflection (5–7 min)
Discuss answers together and highlight common mistakes.
Ask 2–3 comprehension questions orally (“Where did Tom go?”, “What did he eat?”).
Optional: Students write 3 sentences about their own yesterday using past simple.
Teacher tips
Add fun sound effects or pictures to each question to keep students focused.
Use the “Smart Review” function in Quizalize to automatically assign extra practice to students who scored lower.
If devices are limited, project the quiz and play in teams.
Expected learning outcome
By the end of the activity, students can correctly form and recognize past simple verbs and use them to describe past actions in short, meaningful contexts.
