Short description
This activity for 2nd graders aims to help students learn classroom vocabulary using the Scavengar EDU app while practicing reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills. Students complete different interactive tasks, such as taking pictures of classroom items, answering multiple-choice questions, and identifying objects or colours, earning points for each completed task. Before starting, students review the vocabulary and instructions to ensure confidence during the activity. The teacher supports and monitors them, encouraging the exclusive use of English with the help of a phrase guide sheet that provides useful expressions for various situations. Throughout the scavenger hunt, students practice pronunciation, communication, and teamwork in English, receiving motivation and praise from the teacher.

Sample activity
This activity is created to help students on learning classroom vocabulary using the Scavengar EDU app. Additionally, the activity also provides an opportunity to practice reading, since students will engage with written instructions and vocabulary items throughout the tasks; listening, because they will have to listen to each other and the teacher talking in English; speaking, since they will have to talk to each other in English and say some key vocabulary out loud, while the teacher will be checking if they are pronouncing the word correctly; and writing, because they will have to search for some words in the app.
In this activity, the students will complete different type of tasks in groups of four using the Scavengar EDU app. After each task, they will find an item which will give them more points. In a previous lesson, the students would have already reviewed all the vocabulary and received clear explanations regarding the instructions for each task. Therefore, when carrying out the activity, they will be familiar with the required actions and able to participate with confidence. Nevertheless, the teacher will remain attentive throughout the activity and will provide assistance whenever necessary.
Additionally, during the activity, the teacher will encourage students to speak only in English during all their interactions. To support them, she will provide a phrase guide sheet that contains useful sentence structures. This sheet will help students know what to say in different situations, such as finding objects, answering quiz questions, describing colours, choosing GIFs, giving opinions, or interacting with classmates. With this guide, students will be able to participate confidently and actively, without needing to translate from Spanish. The teacher will also motivate them throughout the activity, giving praise and encouragement as they use English to communicate. By using the phrase sheet, students can focus on speaking English naturally, completing the tasks, and enjoying the learning experience. At the end of the explanation, you will find the “Key phrases” worksheet that the teacher will hand to the students.
Once they press the “Start” button, they have to find the first task: “Find a bag”. In this task, they have to take a picture of a bag with the app. Then, they have to find the first item, the “Star”, which will give them six points. After that, they have to find the second task, which is a multiple choice quiz with the question: “Which one is used to sit?”, and the options are: a chair, a board, a notebook, and a pencil. Once they answer correctly, they need to find the next item, the “Crystal”, which will give them twelve points. Sequently, they have to find the third task, which is “Find something blue” related to school vocabulary. In this activity, they have to take a picture of a blue object related to school vocabulary. Then, they will find the item “Emerald”, which will give them twenty-five points.
Once they find the “Emerald”, they have to find the next task, which is “Find a GIF”. In this task, the kids have to say “Board!” and choose a GIF of a board. The teacher will check if they are pronouncing the word right. Once done, they will find the item “Coins”, which will give them one point. After that, they have to find the next task, which is “Find and object”, in this case a water bottle. Here, the students have to find a water bottle and take a picture of it. Then, they will find the object “Star”, which will give them six points. When they find the pen, they can follow with the sixth task, which is a multiple choice quiz with the question: “What do we use to write?”, and the options are: a pencil case, a laptop, a pencil, and a rubber. Once they answer correctly, they need to find the “Crystal” that will give them twelve points.
Following the game, they must go with the seventh task, which is “Find an object”, in this case, a water bottle. Then, they should also find an “Emerald”, which will give them twenty-five points. After that, they can go with number eight, “Find something red”, where the kids should discover objects in class according to that colour. When they finish it, they need to find a “Ruby”, which will give them fifty points. Sequently, they should follow with number nine, in which activity of “Reaction GIF”, they should say “Notebook!” out loud and choose a reaction GIF from the ones given by the app about a notebook. The teacher will check if they are pronouncing the word right. With this activity, they need to find a bag of “Coins”, and it will give them one point. And last but not least, they will find a message which says “The end!” and “Great! You have completed the hunt! Now you know a lot about school vocabulary!”. After that, they have to find the finish point.
