Alejandro Garcia and Carla Alsina
Short description
Students use two AI tools, Leonardo.AI (image generator) and ChatGPT (text generator), to create characters and write a collective story in English. The activity integrates language use, creativity, and digital competence through description and narration.
Lesson outline:
Create characters with Leonardo.AI.
Share and describe them orally.
Write a collaborative story with ChatGPT.
Read stories aloud and compile a class storybook.
Contextualization
This activity is part of a cross-curricular language project (Catalan, Spanish, and English) focused on narrative and descriptive writing. In English lessons, students have been learning adjectives and vocabulary to describe characters physically and emotionally. This session applies that knowledge in a meaningful digital task.
Target age: 9–12 years old (4th - 6th grade Primary Education)
Target language level: A1–A2
Location: Classroom (with digital devices)
Lesson aims
To use English to describe and narrate.
To apply descriptive vocabulary in context.
To develop creative and digital competences.
To produce a collaborative written story in English.
CEFR competencies integrated
1. Production (spoken & written)
Students produce short descriptive and narrative texts using simple vocabulary and structures (CEFR p.70–78).
2. Interaction (spoken interaction)
Students engage in cooperative discussion and decision-making about character traits (CEFR p.83–90).
3. Mediation
Learners co-construct meaning while discussing and combining their prompts to create a shared story (CEFR p.105–120).
Learning objectives (SWBATs)
Students will be able to use basic adjectives to describe characters (appearance and emotions).
Students will be able to ask and answer questions about characters using simple structures.
Students will be able to write short sentences describing people and places.
Students will be able to work cooperatively to design prompts and create a story using AI tools.
Students will be able to present and read their story aloud to their peers.

Ensure school devices (laptops/tablets) have access to Leonardo.AI and ChatGPT.
Create or verify classroom accounts if necessary.
Test both AI tools to ensure stable functionality.
Print Worksheet 1 (Leonardo.AI) and Worksheet 2 (ChatGPT Guide) for each group.
Prepare a digital folder or shared document for the final storybook.

Brief description of each phase of task cycle
Pre-task (20 minutes)
Review adjectives for appearance and emotions (e.g., tall, short, happy, sad).
Teacher models how to answer simple descriptive questions.
Introduce Leonardo.AI and explain how to create an image using a written prompt.
Main task (40–50 minutes)
Step 1: Character creation (Leonardo.AI)
Students work in groups of 3, answering questions from Worksheet 1.
They use their answers to write a short English prompt for Leonardo.AI and generate their character image.
Step 2: Oral sharing
All groups share their images on the board.
Students discuss and guess how other groups described their characters.
Step 3: Story writing (ChatGPT)
Using Worksheet 2, each group builds a detailed prompt including setting, time, characters, problem, and ending.
They input the full text into ChatGPT to generate their story.
Post-task (20–30 minutes)
Each group reads their story aloud to the class.
The teacher facilitates a reflection on vocabulary, structures, and cooperation.
All stories are compiled into a Class Storybook (digital + printed version).
Examples of materials and app in use
Leonardo.AI: Students write “A happy boy with brown hair and a red hat in a forest” → AI generates a character image with these characteristics.
ChatGPT: Students input their completed prompt to get a child-friendly story like: “One sunny morning, Max the happy boy and his friends found a magic hat in the forest…”
