In this activity, students in an EFL class will have the opportunity to develop their linguistic, cultural, and digital competencies. To celebrate Halloween, we invite students to immerse themselves in a 360-degree adventure in Lincoln Hall and the Main Library, places on the UIUC campus purported to be hunted. Their mission is to help a ghost find justice.
Teenage students (13 to 15 years old)
Level: B1
This activity is part of a unit in which students are learning about American holidays and how to use the simple past tense and Google Drive.
By the end of this activity, students will be able to
read short mystery stories narrated in the past tense,
write letters describing past events,
understand certain elements that make up the Halloween tradition,
explore the possibilities of 360-degree technology, and
use Google forms.

Pre-task 1: Students will learn spooky vocabulary.
Pre-task 2: Students will learn the structure of a letter.
Task: Students will go on an adventure solving challenges and reading a story in stages as they advance on the activity.
Post-task: Students will write a letter retelling a past event.
Scaffolding was provided in the form of pre-tasks. In the first one, the teacher and students worked on how to format, draft, and organize the contents of a somewhat formal letter, and in the second one students did activities in a worksheet where they could apply previously learned spooky vocabulary.
In this activity, students are asked to take the quizzes embedded in it, read a short story, and write a letter.
Today we'll be going on a ghostly adventure on the UIUC campus! Legend has it that ghosts live in some of the buildings, with Lincoln Hall and the Main Library being two of their favorite haunts (get it?). Your task is to help Alistair Charles Ravensdale rectify a terrible wrong from the past. To do so, follow the steps below.
Get in pairs.
With your mouse, click on the image below. Now move your mouse in any direction. You'll see that the image moves. (If you want to go into fullscreen mode, click on the window icon on the upper right-hand corner of the frame.)
Find the hotspots on the frames and click on every one of them. You'll find fun challenges and trivia questions there, but also the pieces of the story you need to put together to help Mr. Ravensdale.
Make sure to click on:
The yellow stars to listen to Mr. Ravensdale's messages.
The yellow question marks (?) to solve the challenges. Attention! These challenges include a clue at the top of the page that will lead you to the hotspots with the pieces of the story.
The quill-and-parchment icon in the library (next to the yellow star) to complete your final task.
Good luck! (You'll need it . . .)
