Short description:
Using the app NightCafe Creator, students will create artificial intelligence pictures that represent imaginative narratives constructed by some dice throws.
Contextualisation:
Target age: third-year students
Target language level: A1 english(begginer)
Location: Indoor
Lesson aims
Promote the responsible use and imaginative skills when using digital technologies to illustrate narrative concepts.
Encourage basic oral and written English production through storytelling.
Foster creativity and teamwork when working in group projects.
CEFR competencies integrated:
Production (p.70 - CEFR Companion Volume)
To express creative ideas, students use basic written and spoken language.
In this exercise, students use random dice to write short stories in English, which they then turn into textual prompts for the AI picture generator (NightCafe Creator). They practise using simple frameworks to describe personas, places and activities. In line with CEFR A1-A2 production descriptors, this enhances their capacity to generate coherent sentences and brief narratives.
Interaction (p.83 - CEFR Companion Volume)
During group projects, students engage with their classmates to negotiate meaning and share ideas.
Students must cooperate as a team to complete the tasks: they must agree on the closing sentence or story prompt, debate their dice outcomes, and choose which tale parts to include. They negotiate meaning in English, ask and respond to questions, and express preferences through this process. This aligns with the CEFR's emphasis on beginner-level collaborative interaction.
Mediation (p.105 - CEFR Companion Volume)
Students use language to act as a mediator between abstract concepts and visual representations.
They translate random ideas from the dice rolls, such as "a werewolf in a ship and a spooky theme", into logical English commands that the AI system can comprehend. Students create the visuals and then describe to the class what they see on the screen. This enhances their capacity to communicate meaning in various ways, including both verbal and visual.
Communicative language competences (p.132 - CEFR Companion Volume)
Linguistic competence
Students employ fundamental grammar and vocabulary associated with storytelling.
They reinforce fundamental grammar patterns (subject + verb + complement, adjectives, prepositions) by applying and recycling words about characters, emotions, and situations.
Sociolinguistic competence
When interacting in groups, students utilise polite and helpful language
They demostrate understanidng of social appropriateness in communication by using classroom terms for taking turns, agreeing, and suggesting.
Pragmatic competence
Students construct brief but cohesive stories by rationally arranging their ideas. In order to help students develop early pragmatic coherence, the exercise promotes sequencing and organising concepts into a beginning, middle and end.
Learning objectives
Pupils will be capable of:
Use basic English language when describing characters, locations, and actions.
Using random prompts, collaborate to write and deliver a short story.
Create a graphic representation of their tale using AI.
Reflect on their artistic decisions and share them with their classamtes.
Preparation for the App task cycle
Preparation time: 15-20 minutes before class
Type: Teacher preparation
Teacher tasks before the lesson:
Download or access NightCafe Creator.
Create an account.
Prepare the three dices with different categories on each table.
Prepare projector or a smartboard to display the Ai image results.
Create paper sheets for them to write the character, theme and scenario they get when rolling the dices.
Materials
App: Nightcafe Creator
Handouts/visual aid: Three dices per table
Equipment: Tablets with internet connection and a projector.
Additional materials: Paper, pencils, rubber, and any kind of material they need to use when writting.
Description of each phase of the task
Pre-task (5-7 minutes)
Teacher presents the "Story Challenge" and explains that pupils will use three types of dices to come up with some prompts in order to create a story based on the AI image created.
A teacher demonstration of Nightcafe Creator is given to the students
Main task (10-12 minutes)
Students work in groups of 3-4 members.
Each group has three dices: one for characters, one for the space and the other one for the theme of the story.
Then they roll the dices and using their results, they create a short sentence in English that later on they will explain the story of it.
Students put the prompt into NightCafe Creator to generate and AI image representing their story.
Groups present the story they invented based on the short sentence and image to the class.
Post task ( 5 minutes)
Class reflection: Which story did you liked the most? Which one did you find the funniest, most creative,...
