Contextualization
This lesson is designed for ESL students at a B2 level. The lesson focuses mainly on vocabulary acquisition on family members. The lesson will use the BookWidget as a comprehension assessment tool.

Students can ask and answer questions about family relationships and activities in informal conversations.

Students can write a short paragraph about their family or a recent family event, using basic vocabulary and structures.

Students can understand short spoken descriptions of family members and their roles.
Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to
identify and describe family relationships and structures,
describe their family trees and their family members,
use family-related vocabulary to construct sentences.
Preparation
Create a crossword puzzle assignment on BookWidget. A model assignment can be found here CrosswordPuzzle
Design a family from a popular animation series or teacher's own family tree. (Simpson's family was used for this lesson design)

Activity 1
Introducing Topic
Teacher displays the family tree and asks the following questions;
Display family tree and ask students the following questions
How many people are in the family?
How many children are in the family
How many adults are in the family?
Teacher explains the nuclear and extended family and asks these follow-up questions
How many people are in your nuclear family?
How many people are in your extended family?
Activity 2
Introducing family vocabulary
Using the family tree(Simpson family) diagram, teacher explains family relations.
Eg; Lisa is the daughter of Majorie and Homer. Clancy is the father of Patty.
Activity 3
Guessing Game
In pairs, students use the family tree provided by the teacher to play a guessing game by taking turns.
Student A silently choses a family member from the Simpson Family tree.
Student B has to find the family member by asking questions such as the following.
Is he the daughter of Mona? Is she the aunt of Maggie? Is he the cousin of Hebert?
Activity 4
Constructing Sentences with Family Tree Members
Each students draws their family tree and describes their family tree to their partners using simple sentences.
Teacher will provide a word bank of adjectives that students can use to describe their family members
Eg: John is my uncle. He is tall.
