WHAT IS PLICKERS?
Plickers is a Classroom tool to collect real-time answers from students.
Is available in both app and website format.
Uses printed QR code and smartphones -> scan responses.
Is used for -> quick quizzes and polls.
Free accounts only 5 questions.
HOW PLICKERS WORK?
With the app, you can generate individual QR codes for each student/group.
The QR codes are used to answer questions or polls.
The answers are scanned with the app through a smartphone.
Students answer the questions depending on the position of the QR code.

PROS OF PLICKERS
Engaging and interactive app: transforms traditional quizzes into a game-like experience.
Teachers can have quickly access to assessment data due to its real-time assessment.
Accessible technology: its free.
CONS OF PLICKERS
Limited question types: mainly multiple-choice questions, limiting the use of assessment formats .
Limited student voice: asesses knowledge and understanding, but not gives opportunities to share opinions, ideas,... .

CONTEXTUALIZATION
This activity is meant to be located inside a classroom.
Aimed at second or third-grade students (7 - 8 years old).
The target English level (based on CEFR) is A1 level.
The students previously learned about animals. They have learnt the main characteristics of animals, that is, they have worked about the different habitats, the physical characteristics, the different types of animals, their food, how they move, what they produce, etc. During this activity, students will review all of these characteristics of animals, so the teacher and themselves will be able to see what their knowledge is on the topic.
LESSON AIMS based on CEFR
The lesson aims based on CEFR for this activity are:
Interaction -> Students have to work together in order to reach an agreement before answering the questions.
Reception -> Students are expected to be able to receive and understand both oral and written information.
Communicative language competencies -> Students are expected to use English as the main language during this activity and to interact with each other.
SWABTs - Learning objectives
To be able to apply previously learned concepts about animals by answering multiple-choice questions in Plickers.
To be able to listen to and understand simple questions about animals.
To be able to demonstrate good oral and written comprehension to be able to apply previously learned concepts in an interactive context.
To be able to discuss and collaborate in groups to reach an agreement and decide on the correct answer with their own Plickers QR codes.
PREPARATION - How to prepare for the activity
This activity requires prior preparation by the teacher to make it as smooth as possible, both for the teacher and the students.
STEP 1 - BECOMING FAMILIAR WITH THE APP
The teacher can see the instruction meant for teachers to get used to the app.
The teacher needs to download and create an account in Plickers on their smartphone.
The teacher needs to create a classroom to create the quiz. (number of students, questions and answers)
The teacher needs to create and print the student's QR codes.
STEP 2- CREATING THE SCAFFOLDING FOR STUDENTS
The teacher should create a visual interaction to show the questions and answers to their students.
The teacher could scaffold materials for the discussion part so students have a pickup.
Ex. Conversation starters, How to give your opinion, etc.
The teacher could create and assign different roles to ensure that students use the target language during the activity.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY STEPS
FIRST PART - PREPARE STUDENTS
STEP 1 - SET THE GROUPS
The students are divided into small groups of 4 - 5 students each.
Teacher gives a QR code to each group to be able to answer the questions and to identify them.
Set roles for each member of the group to ensure that they use the target language.
STEP 2 - EXPLAIN THE ACTIVITY
The teacher explains the activity to students:
Explain how the questions are going to be shown on the board (whiteboard or smartboard).
Explain how to answer the questions with the QR code (each QR code has four sides with a letter on top (A, B, C and D), depending on which letter is on top, the answer will be one or the other.
Explain how after each question is shown and said out loud, they will have a minute to discuss the answer with their group members.
SECOND PART - USE PLICKERS
STEP 3 - TIME FOR A SMALL QUIZ
The teacher starts showing and reading out the first question on the board.
When the teacher presents the questions, also shares the four different answer options. (A, B, C and D).
Set a timer for the discussion and let students start the conversation.
STEP 4 - SCAN THE ANSWERS
Once the discussion is over, the teacher asks the students to lift their QR codes.
The teacher goes around the classroom scanning the QR codes and gathering the student's answers.
After scanning all the answers, the teacher reveals the correct answer to the students.
STEP 5 - REPEAT THE PROCESS
The teacher repeats the last two steps for all the questions.
THIRD PART - LISTEN TO STUDENTS
STEP 6 - HOW WE DID?
The teacher can ask the students how they did during this test and how they felt during this test.
With the app, the teacher gathers the answers of students.
