エリントンのリーダー作は1,000枚を超えると言われており、すべてを網羅するのはまず不可能。

エリントンを聴く上で留意すべきなのは、51年の『Masterpieces by Ellington』まではSPレコードによる録音・発表だったことだ。

この時代は、現代のわれわれの室内音楽体験の前提ともいえる「アルバム」という概念がなかった。

そのため、この時代の音源はどうしても年代別、全集的な編集となる。

とりあえず網羅的なシリーズとしては、フランスのChronological Classics が挙げられる。

24年から53年までの29年間を45枚に収めたこのシリーズが、この時代を聴く上での基礎音源と言ってよいだろう。

このChronological ClassicsはMP3音源の発売などでアクセスしやすくはなっているが、すごいボリュームだ。

この状況を憂いたのか、クラシックレーベルとして有名なNAXOSが同じ音源を14枚に凝縮したシリーズを編集した。

１枚あたり1,000円と値段も手頃であり、この時代のエリントンを聴くのなら、まずこのシリーズを聴くのが早いかもしれない。
