Charcoal on Sketchbook paper
For this project I wanted to do a study in charcoal because it is a very good way to practice contrast in realism.
For materials I used charcoal, mostly quick strokes and blending to create a simple shape and added more layers to achieve darker tones. I used the moldable eraser to lift light layers and help define highlights in the figures.
I chose to use the mannequins because the figures are very defined and it will be a good start to working with light and drawing figures from reference and not from a reference image. I think although this was quite a small project it really helped me understand contrast a little better, and hopefully helped me not be as scared to adding deeper contrast to my realism as it has been a big issue in the past. Overall I think this study was helpful and I am happy with how it came out and it makes me was to go onto graphite(another comfortable medium) and then I can move forawrd into my exploration with a lot harder and complex drawings.
