Placing letters
For this project, I created a design for my father's band the "Howligans" which was an influential band throughout my childhood that I also have been able to play in and sing in for fun.
For the actual name and H on the back, I used linoleum slabs that I carved out of with a whole-made sharp tool made out of a paintbrush and a razor blade. I used a little bit of black paint, in the end, to clear up the splots just for the picture and for practicing stamping the first couple of letters on a piece of paper. For the embroidery, I used an embroidery circle to stretch the fabric tight while I embroidered and finally, I used scrap fabrics and glued them to the inside of the holes the flowers made.
One big challenge I encountered was not having the right tools although I could have tried a different design on paper but I did have the slabs and the ink so I decided to use what I had. Originally I tried to use some tools from the shop to cut the linoleum including a mini screwdriver and a bradawl, and then I tried sharpening a kitchen knife which not only was not sharp enough but was quite slippery and dangerous. To create a tool similar to the ones at school I took apart a razor and bent the strongest part of a single blade and taped the long part along the wooden paintbrush handle. If careful with the angle and how far deep I went with the tool I could create thick and clean lines to create my letters.
