Lily Donate Life

Oil pastel on drawing Paper
Sketch
For this Donate life, I wanted to capture beauty and brightness. In the past year, I did a tree to express growth and small change and I really liked that idea so I decided to evolve this idea with lilies as they are a symbol of hope and they could be very bright.
I chose oil pastels as my material because they are bright and will more easily capture the bright colors than something like watercolor or acrylic in my personal opinion. I also chose oil pastels becuase the more I have worked with them the more I have enjoyed them and I would really like to further explore them as a medium. I used drawing paper becuase I originally had done my lilies in acrylic and becuase it came out horribly I switched to pastels without the proper paper.
I really enjoyed exploring further into oil pastels. I did struggle to make visible details in the lilies and I struggled to portray a specific genus of lily. Another issue I had was filling the background, originally I made a grey to light green hue to illuminate the lilies, but through feedback from a peer critique, I realized that a fuller background would help emphasize the flowers and old create a scene instead of having the lilies drop dead in the middle of a grey abyss. To create this backdrop I created the same shapes and design of the lily stems and leaves but instead of small and stubble strokes, I created them with lines of oil pastel and lots of blending to almost create a illusion of blur in a camera as if only the flowers were in focus.
