Artist Inspired
For this project, I tried to create a pot based of the inspiration from the artist I researched, Chandra Debuse. Chandra's art is so bright and different but at the same time, it is still functional. I think that to me I just don't see a lot of bright and fun pottery. I think that I just don't see a lot of bright and colorful pottery around people's homes and this sparked my interest because it is functional at the same time. So my goal for this project was to create a playful, unique, and functional pot.
To make this pot I used a slab and a cutout foam piece and placed the slab on the board and patted it down so the clay would sink into the form to create this fun bean shape. I then smoothed out the sides and added a dragonfly. The dragonflu broke and I forgot to add the foot peddles so I redid those steps with another slab and made a frog instead and added the feet.
I added a frog to my slab because then it almost gives the idea that this plate/dish is a pond so it represents not only a functional pot but a lake that I think sparks this childhood memory for me that is what I was going for when creating this pot. i am using bright colors to follow the themes of Chandra's ceramic forms. I am going to incorporate fun shapes into my glazing like Chandra to create the fun unique mood of my functioning pot.
I am happy with my work so far. If I were to start over I would be very careful about making the feet placed so that the plate stood flat, but other than that I am very happy with my pot. I have yet to glaze due to it being the midterm and the pots can't be fired due to the broken Kiln. When I do glaze I am going to be very precise so that I am happy with my final pot.
