Scratchboard paper

The ideas that guided this work was to create a piece of art by scratching off the top black film of the scratch board to reveal the light underneath. This would be like reverse from the self-portrait as we would be capturing the light and starting with the shadows. Both of my pieces were animals which made the process easier as I would be capturing the strands of hair and how that hair reflected the light or the color of the animal.

This project was done on scratchboard paper which is like a white filmed paper covered a sort of black paint that can be peeled off. I used hatching tool to get the bigger highlights and hair including eyes and fur patterns, I used the multi hatching tool to create the small hairs and to fill out the patterns that could not be done with the hatching tool along with small shadows. Finally I used the stumbling tool to create halo like affects around the animals to define and emphasize the details.

I choose to do my dog first due to the pictures capture of the natural light.  Although there was a lot of detail within the fur of the dog, I enjoyed the flow and pattern so I purposly choose it. I choose to only capture the head to have a closer detail of the hairs, as you can see in the cat piece I struggles with the design due to the bad camera quality and the size of the hair created a big problem when creating the detail. I decided to make a second piece of art when I had finished my dog early and I enjoyed this unit a lot. My grandmother has previously asked for a art piece of her cat and I decided to use the scratboard as the fur wouold be perfect for the concept of the unit, but due to the limited time and odd camera quality I did not do my best on the second peice. I think that I will come back on this unit during art club and callbacks and try to recreate the second piece to create something I am more proud of.
