Black Underglaze on Fired Clay

Following the themes of scratchboard we were tasked with the assignment to scratch away the light space to create a design or image on a clay slab covered in black underglaze.  Due to the space and tools it would be harder and unrealistic to create a realistic piece with the time and materials we were given so we were tasked with creating our own unique design.

For the design we used white gel on black construction paper to plan out the design using the white space. We used black underglaze that would be able to scratch of the clay. The clay was dried with the underglaze and we used multiple sized and shaped clay tools to scratch of the underglaze off the surface of the clay.

When transferring my design to my slab I encountered the problem that my slab was not big enough to create the design and effect I was planning out. After deciding how I wanted to arrange the design to fit onto the space I did a light sketch in graphite pencil and carved it out. In the end I still thought I could change something or make it better but due to the space I had left I decided to start another piece and use what I knew to create a better fit design and be more precise and careful when carving.
