Coil Pot
A lot of my pictures got lost when my phone got broken which is why there is limited photos, I did take in progress photos.
To make this coil part we build up multiple coils through scratching and slipping. Then we would smooth out the bumps and form our pots. I made mine about the size of half of a hydro flask with most likely around ten to twenty coils. Usually it would be that I would make a couple of coils and scratch and slip them together, and then I would smooth them out, this is because if I smoothed out the layers each time I added a coil it would start to get warped and thin.
At first, I made the pot through the coiling and smoothing out. For the most part, the process was consistent and effective but I could definitely see improvement by the end of the pot. After the actual clay pot was completed I made two idea sketches, one of lighting and one of the sun and moon, they both had good ideas but I decided that instead of taking my time to decide which one I wanted to do ill incorporated both ideas on the pot. The design was made by carving out around the design just like a big and round version of sgraffito. This was probably the hardest point of this project as it took a lot of time to create a neat line and smooth boundary which is a lot harder when you are using tools your not used to.
I used yellow and black(jet black) paint for my underglaze because I thought that I could incorporate the colors of the night sky into my design. I liked this idea because the colors are also bold and will make the design stand out on the cup. I left the carved-out space as a white space because I wanted there to be a strong contrast.
Although this cup is not perfect, but I am very happy with my outcome. I say this because I learned a lot about how to make and use coils which is a completely new skill for me and I definitely saw improvements of my skill through these projects, also I do like the bold finished look of the cup. I did come over a couple of challenges including the carving of the design which took me much longer than everybody else so I struggled to catch up with my glazing but I am very happy with the final outcome.
