Alginate Hand Sculpture

Hand Sketch

Grasping Earth

5" x 3" x 4"

Plaster, Watercolor, and Earth materials

The goal of this project was to use hand sculptures to learn about the materials and to create a scultpure with our hands as the base.

We used aliginate to mold ourhands, plaster to fill the mold, and then I used water colors to paint the world on my hands. To add the concept I added moss, leaves, and pine needles to the cracks and hole in the hands.

I have really started to focus in on nature and environmental concepts in my artwork so I wanted to incourperate the world and nature into the hands.  The only issues I encountered were that everyone was incorperating nature and I didn't want to copy anyones idea or have a unoriginal art piece. The second issue was the watercolors, I was told that it was a good material to use and lahtough I do like the end result it tooks hours or brushing the hands and a lot of water becuase the hands absorb the water so quickly you couldnot make a fluid brush stroke.
