2D Design

Semester 1 Reflection

There has been a lot I have learned in this class but for the most part, I have seen a big improvement in idea generation and problem solving. When I say this I mean my ideas have been more involved and creative and I not only can create an Idea but also the process of how I will make this idea in a realistic sense. This does not mean that my art comes out beautifully every time but I have also gained a better problem-solving mentality through art which helps me know when something is fixable and how I can take the steps to fix it, for example when the beach I made was falling apart on a notebook the day it was due, yet I learned how to fix it, add to it, and still turn it in on time. One major thing I have learned this semester is the basics of 2-dimensional design. As you can see in my beautiful oops, and my WhatchamaDRAWit I dabbled with design and what I learned, but throughout the semester we also learned how to incorporate design into work. In my contour hands and digital drawing I not only used design but other aspects of art to create my final piece.

I think overall I have been the most successful with editing and adding to my art. When I say this I am talking about building onto my art even when I think it has been finished. Usually, when I am done with my work I go no further, but due to suggestions and time I have learned how to push further in my work and I have found it to be successful and I end up being much more happy with my work. I have also been successful with my sustained investigation projects. I say this because although I have worked with materials from nature, they usually don't have a meaning, or at least not compared to the three projects I did. I say they are connected because not only do they connect to and correspond to the materials, patterns, and textures of nature, but they invite the viewer to consider the question 'How does nature impact mental health'?. This question can't necessarily be answered but I believe it is due to the viewer's own experience and I think one thing about my art that I find successful is that people can interpret it differently.

There a couple of things I have struggled with in 2D design, especially realism, design, and finishing things on time.  Although I've learned a little about realism from foundations of art through the portrait and charcoal drawing I still barely understand realism and how you capture beyond colors and shape on paper.  As you can see in my contour hands and my sustained investigation #1 I dabbled very slightly with realism but also added aspects of design, this was because the realism itself just didn't resemble what I was aiming for, the only way I think I can get better at realism is through practice so that will be a goal of mine. I also did struggle with design, although I think I am getting better at adding aspects of design I found it harder to make a plain black-and-white design work, I think you can see this is my beautiful oops. my biggest struggle in this class was turning things in on time, I think this is something that Ms. Medsker will agree with this. I definitely struggled with time management at the beginning of the semester and because I wanted my art to be the best it could be I would spend more time on it than I had.

I think for the future some of my goals include working closer with design, learning more about realism and shading, and diving deeper into 3d models and art. I struggled with design this year and I would like to broaden my skill set especially due to this class being 2D design. I would also like to learn a little more about realism and the process artists go through to get a final realistic art piece.  I think another part of realism that I struggle with is the shading especially contrast which is another reason that learning about realism is one of my goals moving forward. Finally, I would like to learn more about and create more 3-dimensional artworks. in my final two sustained investigations, I played around with modeling and adding 3-D aspects, and as a result, I enjoyed making the art and the final project. For classes I added 3-D Design so hopefully I will learn more about this and become a more experienced 3-D artist.
