The Wilton in Wiltshire Pomeroys & Pumroys
Wilton Somerset - ancient Anglo Saxon town with an abbey, not far from Salisbury. By 1655 Wilton had the first carpet weaving factory in England which would have attracted weavers from far and wide. By 1699 the Clothiers and Weavers of Wilton received a Charter from William III designed to reduce the impact of foreign competition. It flourished and further growth occurred after the 9th Earl of Pembroke, whose country seat was at Wilton House, took an interest in carpet making while travelling in Flanders and France It seems it was he who arranged to smuggling in from France two Huguenot weavers whose skills helped establish the town's reputation.

Mere is a small town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It lies at the extreme southwestern tip of Salisbury Plain, close to the borders of Somerset and Dorset about 20 miles north from the cathedral city of Salisbury . The parish includes the hamlets of Barrow Street, Burton, Charnage, Limpers Hill, Rook Street and Southbrook & the tythings of Chadderwick, Zeals, and Woodlands.
In th C16th Mere had a well established cloth making cottage industry and from the late C17th flax was grown there to provide for linen spinning & weaving .
Mere once a castle , built by Richard Earl of Cornwall in 1253, to which duchy the manor still belongs. The site is now called Castle Hill (seen Here) although all traces of the fortress have vanished.
The ancient custom of Courts Leet and Baron remained , held in October for the Duchy of Cornwall, and by the Dean of Salisbury, at which constables and tythingmen are chosen for the town and the hundred.

Burden Ball may have been named after a piece of land or an inn called the "Bird on the Ball" ; in the C16th Burden's Ball consisted of a single farm on the east side of the Warminster road in Wilton. A map of 1773 shows several other buildings alongside the main road. The present Burden's Ball Farmhouse seen below was built in the mid 18th century, and altered and extended in the 19th century.
