General Moutrie

AJP does not know if there is a connection  but MoUTRIE is a pretty unusual name
Foremost has to be  General William Moultrie 1785

Archive The National Archives Archive reference WO 22 Piece number 62

This interesting name is now mainly Scottish in origin, and can be found in the variant forms 'Moultrie', 'Moutray' and 'Mutrie'.

One Henry Multrar, burgess of Edinburgh, witnessed a Charter of Grothill (now Greenhill, a suburb of Edinburgh), in the reign of David 11 (1329-1371).

The General Register House in Edinburgh is built on the site of the 17th Century Moutray estate.

General William Moultrie, governor of South Carolina from 1785-1787 and 1794-1796, was the son of a Scottish physician, Dr. John Moultrie..

John Moutrie 1729 -1798 was born in South Carolina to a Scottish father, John Moutrie (1702-1771), himself a graduate of Edinburgh University, who was both a general practitioner and an indigo planter.

He fought on the the British side during the American War of Independence which pitted him against his brothers Thomas and William, both patriots. When Florida was returned to Spain following the defeat of the British forces, Moutrie lost much of his property.

He went into exile in England, settling in Shifnal, Shropshire, where he died in 1798.

Moultrie was the first of 117 American students to graduate from Edinburgh's Medical School by the end of the eighteenth century.

These included his second son James Moutrie (1766-1813), the third generation of Moultries to qualify M.D. at Edinburgh.

James Figg was born in Thame, 1684 -1734 possibly in Priest End in Thame to Francis and Elizabeth Figg, one of seven children. His proud boast was ‘Here I am Jemmy Figg from Thame. I will fight any man in England.’

James Figg  whom popular opinion believes lived in a row of cottages in Priestend.Thame
https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/james-figg-the-first-champion.546249/

Figg may be regarded as the first boxing champion, but he was also the first boxing coach, manager and promoter and a true all round fighter, though he was as proficient with a stick and sword as with his fists.

James Figg was 50 when he died in 1734  and left a wife and many children, one of his grandsons also became a Boxing Champion some years later.
