The Pomeroys in Islington were involved in the mining of iron, tin in the parish for which they might have used blackpowder.
Research is needed-
Used in mining, gunpowder consists of black powder, a mixture of saltpetre (potassium nitrate), sulfur, and charcoal, which when prepared in roughly the correct proportions is highly explosive
Haytor Mine in the C18th & C19th produced a mixture of brown haematite and magnetite, the latter much favoured by steel producers. ??
Bagtor streamed tin the river Lemon having been worked since ancient times for alluvial tin but later the mine was worked by three adits and three shafts,
Royal Gunpowder Mills at Waltham Abbey; 1543 First gunpowder mill in England (?) erected by the Lee family at Rotherhithe on the Thames
1548 Gunpowder first used in civil engineering - dredging of the River Niemen
1561 First references to gunpowder at Waltham Abbey. Contract in Calendar of State Papers with correspondence from Marc Antonio Erizzo to John Thomworth (Tamworth), merchant of Waltham Abbey, who bought saltpetre and sulphur.
There were good river communications and empty marshland by the River Lea at Waltham Abbey.
On the site of a former gunpowder factory another museum illustrates the evolution of explosives and the development of the Royal Gunpowder Mills
