Fowey
1569 Fowey
An Important Place in the History of Cornwall
FOWEY is in the hundred and deanery of Pyder, a considerable borough, corporate and market town on the south. It lies 24 miles from Plymouth dock, 31miles from Falmouth, and 244 miles from London.
Fowey harbour is considered the best outlet to the westward of any in the west of England; safe at all times with excellent anchorage allowing vessels to enter at the lowest tide drawing three fathoms water.
The shores are bold and free from danger and ships in distress may run in with perfect safety without cable or anchor.
Today Fowey's deep water harbour will take large modern cruise ships.
During the C14th &C15th Fowey was a significant centre for piracy or privateers who were licenced by the monarch. Called The Fowey Gallants, they included numerous local landed Gentlemen, until Edward IV put a stop to it.
Fowey includes the PARISHES of Lanlivery, St. Sampson, St. Veep, Pelynt, Lansallos and Lanteglos by Fowey (Manors of Lantyan (Goland, Fowey, Lanlivery), Tywardreath (Tywardreath), Polveithan (Lansallos and St. Veep), Polruan (Lanteglos by Fowey) and Manely Fleming (St. Veep, Lanteglos by Fowey, St. Sampson, Lanlivery).
There were merchant pirates in Fowey. Men such as Bodulgate, Arundell, Treffry and John Wilcock who in May and June 1469, in the ship 'Barbara' seized 15 ships off Brittany, Richard Pempous and Peter Bruiton who in 1472 with ships from Fowey were plundering off Portugal.
The Fowey Gallants or the Gallants of Fowey, was group of privateers and pirates who operated out of the port of Fowey, in Cornwall, during the Hundred Years' War in the 14th and 15th centuries.
The port was given licences to attack and seize French vessels in the English Channel, following the assistance the port had given during
the Siege of Calais and the Battle of Agincourt. Many foreign vessels and some English vessels were seized and these activities became very profitable for the corrupt port.
Notable privateers included Mark Mixtow, who was a licensed privateer with a flotilla of three ships, the Dutch pirate Hankyn Seelander was given a privateers licence by The Crown in 1442 and tasked with patrolling the coast. Others involved in piracy included John Trevelyn, Thomas Tregarthen, Nicholas Carminow and Sir Hugh Courtenay owner of the Boconnoc estate. John Wilcock's ship Barbara, seized fifteen ships in two weeks in 1469. Following peace with France, the piracy continued. Edward IV asked the “willing men from Dartmouth” to stop the piracy. A meeting was arranged in Lostwithiel and while the Gallants were there, their ships were seized and the harbour chain removed and several of the pirates were hanged.
From the later 16th century Fowey’s primacy among Cornish ports began to fail because was it was unable to compete with new rivals such as Falmouth, developed, from 1600 onwards by the Killigrews, as large, natural deep-water harbour.
The dissolution of the Priory at nearby Tywardreath in 1536 gave both the Treffry and Rashleigh families the opportunity to became the dominant forces in the town, buying up former priory landholdings. The Rashleighs of Fowey and Menabilly became powerful merchants Philip Rashleigh, younger son of a family from Barnstaple in Devon, purchased the manor of Trenant close to Fowey and went into trade, becaming highly successful before he died in 1551.
In 1570 Fowey was granted the right to return two members of parliament and was often represented by members of these families.
Until about 1640 the fish trade was plagued by marauding Barbary pirates known as the Sallee rovers. They were renegade seamen from all nations who sailed out of bases in North Africa.
At the entrance to the river St Catherine's Castle is the Remains of of a small artillery fort built by Henry VIII to defend Fowey harbour. It has two storeys with gun ports at ground level.
The little town is dominated by the privately owned house called 'Place', a 15th century fortified manor still owned by the original Treffry family who had it built, its fortifications and high boundary wall give the town a feudal atmosphere.
