All round the Houses

Tis is a case of  starting in one place & trying to  close the information circle

This began trying to locate 1597 Sir Thomas in Parkham & Lancross in North Devon.

THIS IS BEYOND CONFUSING !

Layer upon layer of lease holding the Feudal system in full swing -which lasted in England until around the 1600's

The King or the Church owned ALL the land

The King granted possession to knights for a fee of military service, to the aristocrats, Earls &  Dukes Etc

The Church leased its lands to be worked  for payment and or tribute to the Church

The Aristocrats, Earls or  Dukes  leased it to Knights and Barons - as Lords of the Manor

who leased parcels of land to landed gentlemen

who leased for an annual fee it to Yeoman, farmers & husbandmen

right at the bottom of the social heap  were the people who did all the hard work .
The Agricultural Labourers (in feudal times these were slaves, villeins and unfree men )upon whose backs the entire edifice rested - enslaved or compelled to work the land and pay a rent for the hovel in which they lived. as they scraped a miserable existence .

Shute House Gatehouse today

Bonville of Shute
SHUTE Manor passed to de la Pole

William Pomeroy  of Farway  evidently worked on the SHUTE estate  in 1579  ...

Shute Manor was a Hall House originally built in  1380  it was a simple parallelogram measuring externally 36 feet by 46 feet, containing a single large room.
The Great Hall had 4 great  gothic windows and an entry  door , which survives, in the middle of the northern façade. Two 12 foot flanking windows were later filled in, although their outlines are still visible in the stonework. The fireplace was at the western end and the dais on which was situated the lord's table was at the opposite eastern end, beyond which was the screens-passage leading to the domestic outbuildings.

A private chamber for the lord's private occupation was built over the screens-passage, but extended partially into the great hall as a gallery, leaving most of it still open to the roof. The chamber was reached by a circular staircase inside an octagonal tower accessible from the dias.

Shute House as it once was

COMING OF AGE for marriage was 14 for boys & 12 for girls;

….  In October 1413 the young  William offered proof of age and in June following he sued out livery of the Bonville and Fitzroger lands in Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire which had not been assigned in dower to his mother and to Alice Bonville (his maternal grandmother who was also the widow of his paternal grandfather). His mother had died two months earlier, but a few years before her death she had permitted her own inherited estates in Leicestershire (including the manor of Great Glen), Sussex (including Merston), Dorset and Kent to be settled for life on her second husband, Richard Styuecle*,  Stukely

Bonville had connections with Courtenay, Sir John Herle of Tywardreath. Lord Poynings (otherwise known as St. John of Basing)  Grey of Ruthin.

Hungerford, Tailboys &  Lutterell; Nicholas Radford of Upcott. Edward Brooke, Lord Cobham (son of the Sir Thomas Brooke with whom Bonville had quarrelled in 1427) which name connects to Richard of Totnes and John Ford of Bagtor & Ashburton
