William was son of  John - (Joseph ) & Patience Pomery Bb at Otterton  on 16 Nov 1749

In the 17th Century one of the biggest problems for the merchants of Exeter & Topsham was the predation on their ships of Corsairs, the so called Barbary or Salee pirates

In 1636 the 'Swan' of Topsham was set upon by two Turkish men o'war near the Scillies, forcing the Swan to run ashore to save itself.

Similarly the80 ton  'Lark ' lost fifteen men and boy & the 'Patience' two days out to Newfoundland, & the barque the 'Rose Garden', were all lost to pirates.  Admiral Robert Blake was sent to drive off the pirates in 1654, with some success, but the pirates continued to harass local shipping.

In the late C15th Otterton Harbour was gradually silting up and only small fishing boats use it. However harbours lower down the Estuary were still used by trading vessels. Merchants mariners and shipowners were moving into the Lower Otter Valley building houses and farms in both East Budleigh and Otterton manors. Sheep farming became the most profitable occupation during the 15th & 16th. centuries.

At the Reformation 1539  Richard Duke had  bought Otterton and East Budleigh as well as  Lindridge at Bishopsteignton on the Teign.

Exmouth is the oldest tourist resort in Devon but  Prior to the 1700’s Exmouth it was just a small fishing town, with  beach but not formal harbour

Devon Freeholders Book,

Freeholders were recorded to identify  inhabitants of the county who were eligible to serve on juries

The qualification from 1692 until 1730 was to own freehold or copyhold land with an annual value of £10 or more.

After 1730, tenants of land worth £20 per year held on long leases were also eligible.

Eligibility was restricted to men between the ages of 21 and 70.2

This part of the Pomeroy Tree appears to connect directly to Honiton where there were several generations of earlier Pomeroys -

Topsham is upriver from Woodbury & 5 miles upstream from Exmouth ; it was a busy port with ship building

The many Dutch style houses in Topsham date from the time when it was an important port  for the wool  from South-West England  & the houses were built using Dutch bricks, which were brought over as ships ballast.  More about Topsham here

William Pomeroy of Topsham  Bb 17 Sep 1599 Twin daughters baptised  Ellinor & Agnes  -nothing more found as yet (2020)

Having a share in a ship could lead to riches or to ruin however  local travel west of Exeter in the C18th was easier by sea , simply because the roads were atrocious It was said that there were no roads west of Exeter which could be used for wheeled traffic.

" This infernal road was most execrably vile with ruts four feet deep"

Littleham church path, between Budleigh Salterton & Littleham, Devon dates from when Budleigh was a small fishing village called Salterne; without a church it was in the parish of Littleham & a regular walk to church on Sundays.

2020 & AML  is currently  researching the DNA of William Pomeroy, Innholder,  age 36, of Withycombe Raleigh, inducted into Freemasons, ship builders chapter in Exeter, 1784 ( gives an EDB of 1749)

1783  2 labourers broke into his cellar and stole 4 gallons of  his cider.Punishment C18th style...   So not only did they have monumental hangovers they were also fined 6d, a week in Bridewell jail and a whipping with the birch.

None of the Inns William was keeper of exist anymore . The alterations made in  Exmouth by the Rolle family  demolished both of them
