St NEOT
St. NEOT. CORNWALL Not St Neots which is 275 miles away in Cambridgeshire
This little town is in the second largest parish in Cornwall and is an area of contrasts. To the north lies the bleak landscape of Bodmin Moor , also called Fowey Moor . To the south lies soft lush farmland deeply dissected by the rivers that flow south off the moor. The boundary of the parish is the River Bedalder flowing off Hard Head Moor. The eastern and southern parish boundaries are formed by the Fowey River which cascades over Golitha Falls to meet with the St. Neot River. The St. Neot river was anciently known as the Loysan and later the Loveny .
Wool was a significant export however Cornish wool was regarded as poor quality, but tin and copper were another matter all together
After the 1540s, Cornwall's tin production increased rapidly by which time Devon's production was down to about 10% - 11% of that of Cornwall. From the mid-16th century the Devon stannaries generated very little income for the Crown, and they were sidelined under the Privilege of Parliament Act 1512.
The first Crockern Tor & Parliament Steps
The Stannary Parliament in Devon was held in 1494 and the last in 1748.
A second tin boom in the tin industry came around the 16th century when open cast mining was used. German miners who had knowledge of the techniques were employed. In 1689,Thomas Epsley, a Somerset man, developed a method to blast the very hard granite rock loose, using gunpowder with quill fuses. It revolutionised hard rock mining. Six days' work with a pick could be accomplished with one blast.
There was a third boom in the 18th century when shafts were dug to extract the ore.
Only 11 miles away is FOWEY the nearest deep water port to St Neot, and in medieval times the Fowey river was navigable up to Lostwithiel which was only 7 miles downstream from St Neot.
CALENDAR OF PATENT ROLLS.1447 - 26 Nov 1447 Westminster, Commission to Thomas Gylle the elder (Dartmouth) and Thomas Trefrye (Fowey) to survey all ships, barges and boats laden the ports and other waters and places along the coasts of Cornwall with wools, hides, wool-fells,(sheepskins) woollen cloths and other marketable wares for foreign parts, whereon merchants have paid no custom, and to arrest the same and certify the king in the Exchequer of the names of the guilty and of the wares and their value.
The Cornish Stannary or tin towns, were at Penzance, Truro, Helston, St Austell, Bodmin, Liskeard & Lostwithiel.
There were a number of tin mines in the river valleys in the area - seen here -
Tinners were subject to Stannary Law paying every seventh dish of tin as royalty.
During the 17th century there was a blowing house (tin smelting house) behind Town Mill in St. Neot.
One of the joint owners and blower of the St. Neot Blowing House was Walter Hodge. He may be the same Walter Hodge, who in 1645 was a wealthy weaver. He had his own token (to be used as a coin) with a shuttle design on it.
At the same time that St. Neot Blowing House was in production John Cowling Senior of Milltown, St. Neot, was working his Tucking Mill as a Fuller. Another fuller was Ralph Henwood of St. Neot. A Tucking Mill for Fulling cloth would require waterpower to drive the machinery.
The cloth was dyed in large vats of water which was heated and natural vegetable dyes were added . Plants such as madder, weld or dyers greenwood were used & Woad produces a bright blue dye. The madder produces a range of reddish colours from rosy pink dye to a rich red brown. When alum is added it gives a yellow dye. Lichen, collected from the moorland rocks, was used & with a mordent of tin ,made a bright red cloth . This red serge cloth was used for the red tunics of the British Army .
Once dyed the cloth was stretched out on tenterhooks to dry out of doors. The cloth, which was mainly serge was taken to Exeter by packhorse to be sold. When the cloth trade failed in the late 18th century many tucking mills were adapted into gristmills. There are many mills in and around St. Neot, the leats being diverted from the mainstream of the river to drive water wheels.
There were several mines around St. Neot mainly for tin and copper. All had fluctuating fortunes and none were in production for any great length of time. In the mid-nineteenth the mines in west Cornwall suffered serious decline and some miners came to St. Neot hoping for work and bringing an increase in the local population. At the same time there was a shift in population from the west of Cornwall to east of the county. Then when prices of ore dropped for Cornish ore there followed a failure & closure of many of the mines. This resulted in a mass migration when some 250,000 mining Cornish families migrated to lands far away.
The Wheal Mary was an arsenic calciner, built in 1920 to re-work mine dumps got the nick-name Balscat and Wheal Jerk because by then it was no longer profitable.
Wheal Mary - Great Consols Mine is in the parish of St. Neot, union of Liskeard, Cornwall, and within the mining district of St. Neot. It is situated 6 miles from the town of Liskeard. The nearest shipping place for ores and machinery is at Looe, 12 miles from the mine, 8 of which by canal.
There have been eight shafts sunk. The two engine-shafts were sunk 80 fathoms. The mine was worked by a steam-engine of 141 h.p. for pumping. A water-wheel of 30 feet diameter by 5 feet abreast, was used for drawing, crushing, &c. The mine was drained by steam-power. The minerals found in this sett include copper end tin ores. Held under a lease for 21 years, from 1852, at a royalty of 1-15th, granted by Messrs. Foster of Lostwithiel, Bolith of Chyandour and Mitchell, of Lampen.

Wheal Mary seems to have been the engine house - single storey with loft outshut to the rear The mine engine chimney can be seen in the backgrounds
Charles Grylls to Chris. Bellott, Esq., to John Antis, Gent. and his servants, liberty to search for tin on Lakes Yeatt in St. Nyott and to have a sett in Middle Park to hold according to the custom of the Stannary of Fowey Moor, paying the 7th dish.'

17th Century Churchwardens Accounts circa 1600 - 1677 St Neot
Until the late 17th century , after the English Civil War (1642-1651) and after the Commonwealth period up to 1660, England did not have a standing army. When a threat of invasion was perceived, and a fighting force was needed, the local men of a parish would form an armed Militia group.
These arms were often simply farm implements such a bill hooks , as well as 9 foot pikes or swords which were made in the villages. Guns were rare and cumbersome and fired one shot at a time. The link to Hole Farm gives us this...gives insight into life in 18th C St Neot.
Rundle family lived at Hole Farm from around 1598 and remained until 1856.
….. John ( Rundell) married Eleanor White, daughter of John White, the Vicar of Pillaton. A section of this prosperous family had come to St. Neot to settle at Woodland.
1707, Jonathan of Hole, married Elizabeth Lyne of St. Cleer. She died in either 1722 or 1731 without bearing any children. In 1733, Jonathan married, at the age of fifty-eight, Jane Rowe aged only twenty-two. He had become quite wealthy and left large sums to his widowed half sisterPriscilla Hancock.
He is listed as “yeoman” in administration documents, but that was crossed out and “tanner” written in.
In 1793's "Survey of St. Neot" it appears that the Rundle family owned or leased properties that totalled nineteen, with total acreage of five hundred and thirty. In addition, they had interests in nine separate cottages. The farms were Coomhouse, Hambly's Hill, Hobbs, Jenkins Tenement, Lakesyeat, Ley, Higher Lestow, Lower Lestow, East Lewarne, Pengelly, Higher Polscopp, Lower Polscopp, North Polmenna, South Polmenna, Trebinnick, Tredinnick, Trewindle, Tupton and Hole.
This meant that the family had virtually consolidated their hold on the south-west part of the Parish of St. Neot. In 1803, John was finally able to aquire one third of the other half of Hole by an exchange of land. This third had actually been owned by three people: Christopher Sloggett, Mary White, widow, and Thomas Pomery, all of whom were related to each other and to John Rundle through the White family.
John Rundell , described as a “Gentleman”, died in 1806 without leaving a will. …..
